Title: Listen to the Sound
Summary: Ethan just wants Caleb to survive.
Word count: 838
Disclaimer: Half mine!
Ethan cannot help but be horrified as he watches Caleb struggle across the arena. He is surrounded on all sides. There is a gash across his forehead, another along his chest. His right arm is practically useless by this point, the flesh so badly burned. Caleb is gesturing erratically with his left hand. He finally manages to catch one of his opponents with his power and sends the man flying across the arena. He crashes against the stone wall and crumples for a moment. It will not be enough. Caleb needs more.
Ethan is standing in the main box, five feet behind their master. Their master — who seems unerringly pleased with himself — and Ethan just cannot fathom it. He has doomed Caleb to die. Ethan cannot see how Caleb will walk out of this match alive and he aches with the realization. His pulse is too loud, ringing in his ears. He cannot bear to watch Caleb die. It’s why he has always avoided watching the matches, but for some reason, today is different.
The roar of the crowd is a deafening backdrop to Ethan’s hammering heart. They are on their feet, screaming with pleasure and dismay. They are a nebulous being, arms waving, as they try to direct Caleb to victory or defeat.
In front of him, Caleb’s sister, Madeline, straightens in her chair. Ethan cannot see her face. He doesn’t know what expression she is wearing; he can’t tell what she’s thinking. He suspects that both of them want to save Caleb in equal amounts. Both of them are bound — Ethan by his status as his slave and Madeline by her physical inability to stop the match. If he had his freedom, he could do it. If she had his powers, she could do it.
The master learns over from his chair, his hand brushing the arm of Madeline’s. Ethan can see her head turn toward him.
“You see,” The master’s tone is still amicable even if his message is not. “I will see your brother in pieces before I sell him to you.”
Ethan can hear from where he’s standing and feels his stomach tighten, feels the ground fall out from underneath him. Below them, Caleb hits the ground. Ethan cannot hear him, but he can see the way his mouth opens in a cry of pain.
It is undecidedly unfair. Caleb is a boy in so many ways. Ethan feels the sting of his youth in a way that he had forgotten. The memories of Caleb’s entrance had faded, but they come flooding back now. He remembers the way he looked, a boy of twelve, stumbling into the arena. The most gifted telekinetic, they said. Stolen from his family home; the thieves passed by both sisters, who were not gifted, and took the boy. And after he had been tortured for more than six months, he had been sold, at an extravagant price, to the master. He had been put in the arena at thirteen, a move that caused controversy and outcry — and none of that had stopped Caleb from becoming a champion, swaying the hearts of the nation as he conquered every foe.
And by sixteen — by sixteen, he had managed to find his way into Ethan’s bed, because Ethan couldn’t deny him. Ethan needed him just as much as he needed Caleb. The age difference had dwarfed that and he had hoped to make up, in some small part, for everything Caleb had lost. The childhood he had scarcely known and the adulthood he had been forced into.
As he watches Caleb crumple against the ground again, he remembers that he’s young. He remembers what’s being stolen from him. He will be barely more than a child if he dies this day.
Ethan closes his eyes, lets the roar of the crowd fade into the background. He thinks about what he will do when Caleb is finished. When he has won, their master will entrust Caleb back to his care. He will fix Caleb. He will heal him, and then he will hold him. He will press kisses against his mouth, will let his fingers explore his skin, wary of any recent injury. He will not give into Caleb’s impatience. He will touch him slowly, exploring him, imprinting the moment in his memory. He’ll curl his fingers about Caleb’s cock, watching as his face floods with pleasure, watch as he partakes in perhaps the only thing he’s enjoyed in his life.
He will make him come in anyway he can, fingers and mouth. He will thrust inside of him only when he is healed, making it so that Caleb remembers what to keep fighting for, making it so that they are bound together across the moment that Ethan must now face. He will be the last person that will protect Caleb. He will fight in a way that Caleb doesn’t know how to yet, because he is too young.
He opens his eyes and watches as Caleb climbs to his feet again.
