|Name: River Tam|
Age/Date of Birth: 17 / July 14, 2500
Sexuality: Curious; she's certainly not been consciously sexually attracted to anyone yet, but she is slowly becoming aware of her own sexuality.
Prospective Job: She's never had to work before, but, really, probably almost anything will entertain her. She might have some trouble with customer service-based job, but something with a lot of intelligence or even something hospital-based might be good for her.
Canon point: Post-Firefly, pre-Serenity
Arrival Date: I'll intro her the day she's accepted
PB: Summer Glau
As a result of the experimentation done on her, many parts of River's personality are fractured. At the core is who she was and who she was becoming before she went to the Academy, she's a friendly and vibrant girl. She likes to make friends and be around people. She very much enjoys games and dancing. She's incredibly curious, especially about things that are unfamiliar to her. She likes to ask questions and loves learning new things. She seems almost fearless because of that. She enjoys new experiences so much that she doesn't necessarily process the danger associated with doing things.
In that vein, she's extremely intelligent. While she can't always access everything she knows, she does have a wealth of information, and is capable of doing very advanced mathematics and science in her head and knows several languages.
She's very intuitive, and was so even before she was experimented on. She's good at reading people, and of course, now she's reached psychic levels on that. So, even though she doesn't always react to things in an appropriate manner, she always has a very good read on people and knows precisely when to trust people and when not to.
She's also unstable in many regards, however. The experimentation on her brain has reduced her to a childlike state in many ways. She might have a greater intelligence than almost any other adult she's ever met, but she has a difficult time processing or understanding many emotions. She can be overwhelmed and have a difficult time expressing herself, sometimes resorting to tantrums or childlike speak. She can often come off sounding cryptic and has been violent on occasion, sometimes without intending to be.
River Tam was born to a wealthy family on Osiris, the younger sister of Simon Tam. Growing up, she wanted for almost nothing and was relatively protected from the upset in the rest of the universe. She was young when the war of unification happened and only aware of it in a distant sort of way. It certainly never affected her day-to-day life.
She was ruthlessly intelligent and imaginative as a child, enjoying all sorts of games and excelling at everything she put her mind to. By the time she was fourteen, she was already in graduate programs at school and still breezing through those. She was offered an opportunity to attend an Academy sponsored by the Alliance, and managed to convince her parents to let her go, eager for a fresh learning opportunity.
However, it wasn't long after arriving there that she began to realize that something wasn't quite right and that she'd made a mistake in coming. This certainly wasn't the exciting program that she'd been told about and that she'd signed up for. They began experimenting on her, cutting into her brain, trying to coax forth latent psychic abilities while simultaneously improving her physical capability. She was unable to get in touch with anybody to tell them what was being done to her for months. Finally, she was able to get a letter out to Simon, written entirely in code, asking that he come and get her.
He did, but by then she was already mentally unstable, often not able to distinguish between what was real and what wasn't. There were too many fresh voices in her head, too many feelings, and it was difficult to tell which were hers and which were other peoples. She still had a thousand and one facts running around her, but the easy organization her mind had had before was gone.
Simon smuggled her out of the Academy and they joined the crew of Serenity. Things were notoriously difficult at first, partially because the rest of the crew didn't trust them, they were both openly wanted by the Alliance, and River's mental state fluctuated seemingly without cause. Simon, a talented doctor, tried to treat her to the best of his ability, but it was difficult to tell what exactly had been done to her.
Through time and resourcefulness, River and Simon grew to be a part of Mal's crew. They have to be perpetually on the lookout for any sign of trouble, especially when it comes to the Alliance, who is still hunting them. One of the times that it was most evident that they had become a part of the ship was when Simon was taken by a village, and Mal came back to rescue them anyway, saving them both from certain death.
As time passed, River's new abilities became more obvious as well -- in that village, she was able to read the mind of a young girl who was mute.
Simon was eventually able to figure out exactly what was done to her. With the help of Serenity, they journeyed to Ariel and broke into a hospital. Simon was able to get an image of River's brain, and saw that the government had cut her brain so that she felt everything at once -- she's not able to process feelings normally. During this trip, Jayne did betray them to the Alliance. They were all nearly captured before making a narrow escape, but proving, once again, that they were wanted by people very high up the foodchain.
Some of River's more physical abilities caused concern later on when, during a gun fight, she was able to shoot precisely without looking and then found a gun on the ship. While it caused unease amongst the crew, River proved that the ship was her home once again when she fended off a bounty hunter who intent on claiming her and Simon.
Each day is something new for her. Often a struggle, but she enjoys the learning process of it all and does truly see Serenity as her home and the crew as her family.
| River has intelligence beyond the normal scope. She was experimented on to be the perfect assassin, and while that obviously didn't succeed, she does display telepathic abilities, which are mostly shown through her being incredibly intuitive, but she has also picked up entire memories from other people and often has a heightened awareness of her surroundings. She's also incredibly skilled in combat, both hand-to-hand and with weapons, although she's still not exactly comfortably with guns.|
